Donald Duck Gains Power of Thor in Marvel What If…? Comic

Donald Duck is not numbered among the comics’ medium’s greatest warriors. However, when push comes to shove, the maladjusted mallard has managed some mighty feats in defending his family. This fall, the one who gets stuck with all the bad luck will prove worthy of the power of Thor. This unlikely tale will unfold in Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor #1.

Based on a plot by Steve Behling, the comic will be written by Riccardo Secchi with art by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio. The story will find Donald Duck chaperoning his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie on a class trip to a Viking ruin. It is here that he stumbles across the Stone Ducks from Saturn preparing for an invasion of Earth. Luckily, Donald also uncovers an enchanted cane that grants him the power of the thunder god Thor.

In addition to the book’s main cover by Lorenzo Pastrovicchio, the series will feature three variant covers. Two of the covers are provided by fan-favorite artists Phil Noto and Peach Momoko. The final cover is provided by legendary Thor writer/artist Walter Simonson, parodying one of his iconic covers of the Odinson.

All four variant covers can be viewed below.

Donald Duck as Thor continues Disney/Marvel crossovers

Despite being bought by Disney in 2009, Marvel Comics has not published any comics based on classic Disney animation. That changed this year with the June 2024 publication of Uncle Scrooge and the Infinity Dime #1. There is also another What If…? story, based around Donald Duck becoming Wolverine releasing in July 2024. The success of the line so far has prompted the promise of more Marvel/Disney crossovers after the release of the Donald Duck/Thor book.

“When we saw the designs for the Stone Ducks of Saturn and The Destroyer we literally laughed out loud,” Editor Mark Paniccia shared. “I can honestly say I never thought I’d see something like this in my career. I gotta pinch myself to make sure it’s not a dream.”

Marvel & Disney: What If…? Donald Duck Became Thor #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on September 4, 2024.
