The Hulk & X2 to Compete For FX Oscar

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the seven films being considered for Achievement in Visual Effects for the 76th Academy Awards. The films up for the award are The Hulk, X2: X-Men United, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King,” “Peter Pan” and “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines”.

Apparently the Academy didn’t think much about the groundbreaking effects in “The Matrix” sequels – doh! Anyways, we’ve got two superhero films to cheer on and the rest of the competition are excellent films as well.

Fifteen-minute clip reels from each of the seven films will be screened for the Visual Effects Award Nominating Committee on January 21. The members will then nominate three of these seven films for Oscar consideration.

The finalists will be announced along with nominations in 23 other categories on Tuesday, January 27, at 5:30 a.m. PST.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2003 will be presented on Sunday, February 29, 2004, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland and televised live by the ABC Television Network at 5 p.m. PST, beginning with a half-hour arrival segment.
