Marvel Legends X-Men Movie Figures Announced and Revealed

When Disney bought Fox, Marvel fans immediately wondered when the X-Men and Fantastic Four might enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Toy fans wondered similarly. Technically, Hasbro’s Marvel Legends line isn’t prohibited from doing figures from non-Disney movies — they’ve done every Sony Spider-Man movie. But ever since Disney bought Marvel, Ike Perlmutter has discouraged merchandise based on Fox Marvel movies. So for the most part, Hasbro made comic-based figures to tie into those cinematic releases. But now, at last, the toy boundaries are lifted. As announced today at Toy Fair, X-Men movie figures head to stores this year.

Naturally, the line kicks off with the ever-popular Hugh Jackman Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds Deadpool. But that’s not all. The Deadpool-heavy initial assortment includes Cable, Domino, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Mystique (Rebecca Romijn version). And a two-pack of Professor X and Magneto tries to please everyone with interchangeable heads, featuring likenesses of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Ian McKellen, and and Patrick Stewart. The Magneto outfit is definitely the Fassbender version, though. Deadpool and Negasonic also come packaged together, to ensure the most popular character helps carry his less-known ally.

Wolverine is popular enough to merit two versions. A jacketed likeness from the first film, and a tank-top rendition with switch-out bone claws from the Wolverine solo movies. The latter is an Amazon exclusive already up for preorder. Cable is another retail exclusive, available only at Walmart. Because these movie figures are all original sculpts, with no build-a-figure or easy repaints, they cost a bit more. Like the Marvel anniversary figures, they run $24.99. And they are anniversary figures: it’s been 20 years since the first live-action X-Men movie.

Expect these figures to arrive in the fall. And since Marvel just reupped their deal with Hasbro, we can probably count on more. Even the less-liked movies have some good toy potential — the Silver Surfer from that Fantastic Four sequel would look great in plastic.
