Mondo’s The Suicide Squad Soundtrack Gets a Starro-Colored Vinyl LP

Another James Gunn release means another killer soundtrack to go along with it. Now that The Suicide Squad is playing in theaters and on HBO Max, Mondo is teaming up with Troll Court/WaterTower music to release the film’s “curated mix tape” on 180-gram vinyl.

Collectors have two options to choose from. There’s the starfish-colored option, which borrows the blue-and-purple color scheme from The Suicide Squad’s larger-than-life villain, Starro the Conqueror. However, fans can also snag the album on regular black vinyl. Both versions retail for $25 and are expected to ship sometime in September.

True to Gunn’s eclectic taste, the soundtrack features a diverse collection of artists spanning multiple genres. That includes classic rock-n’-roll staples like Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” and Kansas’ “Point of Know Return.” However, perhaps the most fitting track is The Jim Carroll Band’s “People Who Died,” a winking reference to The Suicide Squad’s high body count.

Indie rock devotees will be happy to see contemporary tracks like The Decemberists’ “Sucker’s Prayer” as well as the Pixies’ evergreen hit, “Hey.” There’s also a wild mix of rap (K.Flay’s “Can’t Sleep”), swing (Louis Prima’s ‘Just A Gigolo / I Ain’t Got Nobody (And Nobody Cares For Me)”), and bossa nova (Céu’s “Samba Na Sola”). But beyond this, the album features a song that was written specifically for the movie: “Rain” by grandson & Jessie Reyez. Reyez and grandson have other songs on the soundtrack as well.
