Back To the Future: The Musical Is Coming To Broadway In 2023

Screenwriter Bob Gale and director Robert Zemeckis have been fiercely protective of the Back To the Future trilogy. That’s why there’s no Back To the Future 4 or a reboot happening any time soon. However, the duo never ruled out bringing the show to Broadway. Gale even took an active hand in writing the book for Back To the Future: The Musical, which opened in London’s West End in 2020. And next year, American fans will get their shot to see it when the musical comes to Broadway.

The news was announced on the official Back To the Future Twitter account with a link to the musical’s site. In the West End production, Olly Dobson took over Michael J. Fox’s role as Marty McFly, alongside Roger Bart as Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown, the role originally played by Christopher Lloyd. For now, it’s unclear if any of the original cast members from the West End show will reprise their roles for Broadway.

Back To the Future: The Musical has other direct links to the first movie. The music of the original composer, Alan Silvestri, is used in the play with lyrics by Silvestri and Glen Ballard. Since this is a musical, there are a number of new songs added to the story. However, songs from the original soundtrack including “Back In Time,” “The Power of Love,” and “Johnny B. Goode” are also performed in the musical.

If the show is as big of a hit in America as it was in London, it’s possible that there may be touring editions of the musical as well. But for now, if you really want to see the show, you may want to make reservations when tickets go on sale.
