Peyton Reed Hints at Cassie Lang’s Future in the Ant-Man Films

Ant-Man and the Wasp is out on Blu-ray and DVD today, making it a perfect time for fans to resume speculation about another sequel. Marvel Studios has yet to officially announce a third installment. But given the most recent film’s success, it’s more than likely going to happen.

According to ComicBook.com, director Peyton Reed is already thinking about where the series might go. More specifically, he has ideas for a certain pint-sized member of the cast. “Well, I think one of the things that we’ve set the seeds for in both movies — and I think particularly in Ant-Man and the Wasp — is Cassie Lang, Scott’s daughter,” said Reed. “In the comics, she goes on to be a hero in her own right. So I love the idea that in this movie we see that moment where she covers for Scott and stands up to the FBI agent. We see a little bit of her father’s personality in her. I’m intrigued to kind of see what the future holds for Cassie.”

“There’s some interesting stuff in the Nick Spencer Ant-Man comics where I think they’re living in Miami,” added Reed. “But Cassie is in high school, and she’s having typical sort of issues that high school girl might be having. And I like the idea of Scott Lang sort of having to deal with Cassie at almost any age. I like that dynamic a lot.”

Cassie Lang first appeared in the pages of Marvel Premiere way back in 1979 and she was the driving force behind her father donning the Ant-Man costume. In a desperate attempt to save Cassie’s life, Scott stole Hank Pym’s shrinking tech and used it to rescue the only doctor who could save her life. Over the next several years, the grown-up Cassie followed in her dad’s footsteps. She even took on the costumed persona of Stature as a member of the Young Avengers. In an alternate timeline, she became the heroine known as Stinger.

In the MCU, Cassie was played by the now-10-year-old Abby Ryder Fortson. However, Cassie is apparently being recast as a teenager in next summer’s Avengers 4. Seventeen-year-old Emma Fuhrmann is assuming the role in that film. It isn’t known if Fuhrmann’s appearance is a one-off or if she’ll be permanently taking over the part from Fortson. However, if Paul Rudd ever decides to hang up his suit, we’re sure that either young actress would be capable of taking the franchise (and the MCU as a whole) in a hip new direction.
