Peyton Reed Discusses Ant-Man and the Wasp’s Mid-Credits Scene

After the events of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel’s next film, Ant-Man and the Wasp, was a crowd pleasing comedic palate cleanser…right until it wasn’t. During a recent Collider Q&A screening, director Peyton revealed that the emotional impact of the mid-credits scene was completely intentional.

“We wanted to try and catch the audience as off-guard as possible,” said Reed. “So when [Scott Lang is] left there and you come back and see the three of them dusted it’s just this gut-punch. That felt like the absolute Ant-Man way to deal with it. Because you can’t do what Infinity War did it because it’s the most dramatic swing imaginable in a movie, and in a Marvel movie. And so we wanted to do it our way.”

Reed went on to note that he knew about Infinity War‘s ending while writing Ant-Man and the Wasp. However, the decision was ultimately made to limit the connections between the two films until the mid-credits scene.

Additionally, Reed shed some light on how he and the writers decided who would fall victim to Thanos’ Decimation.

“At one point we talked about, ‘Is Bill Foster up there? Is Eva Starr up there? Do they all dust out?’ but then it became a percentages thing,” added Reed. “It’s supposed to be 50%, so it can’t be, ‘Really? All of them went? That seems different than what I saw in Infinity War?’ There were certain things that we knew. Marcus and McFeely pitched an idea for the scene and we all kind of built off that idea. It involved Scott and it involved Luis’ van and a new Quantum Tunnel 2.0, but it was very collaborative thing.”
