Over the weekend, Aquaman passed a major threshold. While DC’s superhero film is closing in on $300 million domestically, it’s worldwide box office has surpassed $1 billion dollars. It’s the first Warner Bros. superhero movie to pass that mark since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. Aquaman is now in rare company, and no one is happier than the star of the film, Jason Momoa.
Momoa posted a lengthy message to his Instagram account, in which he thanked his fans and his cinematic collaborators. Momoa also offered a direct message of gratitude to James Wan, the director of the film.

What’s next for Aquaman? The rest of January’s films are fairly weak, which should allow Aquaman to stay near the top of the box office for the rest of the month. Aquaman‘s reign at #1 was finally ended by The Upside over the weekend, but the king of Atlantis has a bright future ahead.
A sequel to Aquaman is inevitable, but Warner Brothers and DC haven’t yet announced their official plans. Presumably Momoa and the rest of the cast will reprise their roles in Aquaman 2. Getting Wan back should also be a priority for the studio.
