Ben Affleck Explains Why He Walked Away From Batman

Two weeks ago, Ben Affleck confirmed he was stepping away from his role as Batman. Aside from a cameo in Suicide Squad, his short tenure only included Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Now, Affleck is offering a few additional reasons why he choose to leave the role of a lifetime behind.

While speaking with IGN, Affleck was asked about his departure. In response, Affleck said, “That was part of the problem. We worked on the script, I was trying to figure out how to crack it, and I was never happy enough with it where I thought it was worth going out and making it because I just didn’t want to do a version that I wasn’t really excited by, so I still don’t know.”

The Batman director Matt Reeves recently added some context in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. He cited his desire to explore a younger Dark Knight, as well as Batman’s detective skills.

“I hope it’s going to be a story that will be thrilling but also emotional,” explained Reeves. “It’s more Batman in his detective mode than we’ve seen in the films. The comics have a history of that. He’s supposed to be the world’s greatest detective, and that’s not necessarily been a part of what the movies have been. I’d love this to be one where when we go on that journey of tracking down the criminals and trying to solve a crime, it’s going to allow his character to have an arc so that he can go through a transformation.”
