After months of anticipation, Captain Marvel has finally made its way to theaters. And its early estimates reported by Box Office Mojo suggest that the movie’s Thursday night previews are off to a fast-paced start, with the film grossing $20.7 million from early screenings.
Captain Marvel faced its share of negative reviews from Internet trolls prior to its release. However, fans came out in force to see star Brie Larson in action. Her character teams up with a younger version of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury to face off against a dangerous Skrull threat.
If the movie continues to hold its momentous course, it should finish up the weekend somewhere between $135 and $150 million. While that wouldn’t match Black Panther or Avengers: Infinity War, it would be very impressive. It would also place the movie alongside other strong MCU openings like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 ($146 million) and Thor: Ragnarok ($122 million).

The movie’s worldwide box office tally at the moment sits at $78 million over two days. $6 million came from foreign markets alone. The film could reach $500 million with a matter of a couple of weeks, if it stays on pace.
Social media praise for Captain Marvel has largely been positive despite negative backlash from a few vocal sources. It should have limited competition at the box office until Endgame shows up to clean house on April 26.
