Warning: There are minor spoilers ahead for Captain Marvel!
Prior to his demise in 2018, Marvel icon Stan Lee made cameos in all of Marvel Studios’ MCU films. For Captain Marvel, Lee made a cameo appearance as himself in 1995. In a brief scene on a train, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers encountered Lee as he was reading a film script. The script in question was Mallrats, the second film of director Kevin Smith; which also featured Lee in a cameo appearance.
Via Heroic Hollywood, Smith shared his appreciation for the mention in a post on his Instagram account. He also asked whether his MCU counterpart survived Thanos’ actions at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

Smith’s association with Marvel goes back to 1998, when he wrote the Marvel Knights Daredevil series. Smith’s “Guardian Devil” storyline successfully relaunched that story, and eventually led to his cameo appearance in the Daredevil movie. Smith went on to write a Spider-Man and Black Cat miniseries that was plagued by delays.
More recently, Smith signed on to executive produce a new Howard the Duck animated series for Hulu. Howard the Duck was one of Marvel’s biggest box office bombs decades before the MCU. Regardless, Smith has invited one of the film’s stars, Lea Thompson, to take a role on the new show.
