J.J. Abrams Says There’s ‘More To the Story’ About Rey’s Parents

Last week, the first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker made its debut. It effectively stirring up strong feelings from fans. But it could go much deeper than expected, especially when it comes to providing more details about Rey’s parents. The Last Jedi didn’t provide much of a resolution on that front. Kylo Ren basically told Rey that her parents were no one special and they abandoned her.

However, J.J. Abrams believes there’s more to it. While speaking with ABC News, The Rise of Skywalker director said “we knew going into this that this movie had to be a satisfying conclusion, and we’re well aware that (Rey’s parentage is) one of the things that’s sort of been out there. I don’t want to say that what happens in Episode VIIIyou know, we’ve honored that. But I will say there’s more to the story than you’ve seen.”

Fan theories have been all over the place since the trailer’s premiere. Some speculate that Rey could still be Luke Skywalker’s daughter. Others theories suggest she has ties to Emperor Palpatine, whose familiar laugh was heard in the trailer. There are even fans who believe Rey is somehow related to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

This issue was addressed in a Rolling Stone story from 2017. During filming of The Force Awakens, Abrams told Daisy Ridley (Rey) who her onscreen parents are. And that thinking apparently stayed in place with The Last Jedi. “I thought what I was told in the beginning is what it is,” said Ridley.

But anything could happen in the final chapter in the Skywalker saga. Even the ending could change. We’ll learn more when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrives on December 20.
