Peter Parker will have earned a long respite from crime-fighting by the time Avengers: Endgame’s credits roll. With Spider-Man: Far From Home about to give moviegoers their first look at the post-Endgame landscape of the MCU, relaxation isn’t exactly an option. While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, director Jon Watts and star Tom Holland dished on Peter’s upcoming international adventure.
“Peter’s ready for a vacation at the beginning of this movie, to say the least,” said Watts. “This film is about the world telling him, ‘It’s time for you to step up and grow up, kid,’ and he’s saying, ‘But I still want to be a kid and go on vacation.’”
Spider-Man’s presence in Europe is sure to arouse suspicions about why he’s so far from his New York stomping grounds. According to Watts, this is why Nick Fury gives Peter the all-black stealth suit seen in the trailer. The director also confirmed that Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio will make his introduction as an ally to Peter.

“If Tony Stark was sort of the mentor in the previous films, we thought it would be interesting to play Mysterio as almost like the cool uncle,” added Watts.
Spider-Man’s relatability is a key part of appeal. Holland and the filmmakers are fully aware of that. Following the enthused reaction to Holland’s turn in Spider-Man: Homecoming, the writers wanted to continue highlighting this aspect of Peter’s character.
“Everyone really enjoyed the fact that throughout [Homecoming], there’s always something you can relate to with him,” said Holland. “So in this film, especially, we tried to tailor the script in a way so that we could hit so many different relatable scenarios, so that not a single person in the world felt left out watching this movie.”
