California Officially Recognizes May 4th as Star Wars Day

May 4th is a date that Star Wars fans have cherished for years, largely because it gives them the chance to say “May the fourth be with you.” This cheeky pun has turned the date into an unofficial holiday for fans of a galaxy far, far away. Now, it has an extra boost of legitimacy. Via The Hollywood Reporter, California has officially declared May 4th as “Star Wars Day.”

The California Legislature passed the resolution earlier today in honor of Disneyland’s upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge attraction. According to Democratic Assemblyman Tom Daly, Galaxy’s Edge could potentially accumulate $14 million in annual tax revenue for the city of Anaheim. Additionally, the decree recognizes Disney’s “decades-long record of enhancing the quality of life for people in California and beyond.”

To ring in the decision, the legislature enlisted a charity group to dress up as Stormtroopers outside the Capitol building. If that’s not geeky enough, they also arranged for a Yoda-themed hot air balloon to hover above the Capitol steps. You can check out a video courtesy of CBS Sacramento below.

This news comes just as Galaxy’s Edge is beginning to take reservations for its grand opening on May 31. Via Paste, guests can currently book four-hour visits to the new land in its first three weeks of operation. Only one of the park’s rides, Millenium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, will be functional during this period. However, visitors will have plenty of other ways to entertain themselves, whether they want to build their own lightsaber or relax at the cantina. The second ride, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, opens later this year.
