Back in 2017, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman proved that supeheroines could be a box office draw in their own solo films. The sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, was originally slated to be released this year. However, Warner Bros. ultimately decided to push the sequel to a June 2020 release, which was a move Jenkins favored. But after seeing an early screening of the film, Jenkins has now expressed her regret for that decision.
Via Heroic Hollywood, Jenkins revealed her reversal during a recent interview in which she also spoke about seeing an early cut of the film.
“It’s so funny, for the entire time we were making the movie, I was lobbying,” said Jenkins. “Because [the studio] wanted to move it up much earlier. And I was like ‘you guys, it’s got to be the summer of 2020. It’s got to be.’ And that was what I always wanted. And now, I’ve just screened a version of the film and I’m like ‘oh my God, can we move it back up again?!’ I’m dying to release this film.”

Gal Gadot is reprising her role as Wonder Woman for the fourth time in the film. She’ll be joined once again by Chris Pine, whose character, Steve Trevor, somehow returns despite his demise in Wonder Woman. Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright are also reprising their respective roles as Queen Hippolyta and Antiope. Pedro Pascal’s character has yet to be revealed, but he’s rumored to be one of the film’s villains. Kristen Wiig is playing Wonder Woman’s friend, Barbara Ann Minerva, before her inevitable transformation into Cheetah.
