Six years ago, Man of Steel kicked off the DC Extended Universe by introducing Henry Cavill’s Superman and Amy Adams’ Lois Lane. But according to director Zack Snyder, another actress was in serious contention to play Lois. Via Comic Book Debate, a recent interview with Snyder revealed that Avatar and Star Trek actress Zoe Saldana was a serious contender to play Superman’s leading lady.
“At a time, it was between [Adams] and Zoe Saldana,” said Snyder. “They’re totally different, but their presence is super strong.”
However, Snyder admitted his preference for Adams and shared one of her key contributions to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
“Amy actually inspired that opening scene in Batman v Superman. She mentioned journalists who have been in war zones and we went along with it.”

If Snyder had chosen Saldana for Lois, she would have been the first actress of African descent to play the character on the big screen. Or possibly ever. That’s a move that would have surely been controversial. It would have definitely been a change to the source material, but not necessarily a deal breaker. Lois is, in most stories, a very strong woman. There’s no reason why she can’t be portrayed by a woman of color.
Regardless, if Saldana had gotten the role, she probably wouldn’t have been available to play Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy. Gamora has even gone on to play a larger and more active part in the MCU. So in retrospect, things worked out very well for Saldana.
