Go Behind the Scenes of Annie Leibovitz’s Star Wars Shoot in a New Video

Earlier today, Vanity Fair published their in-depth coverage of the making of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The story also included new images courtesy of legendary photographer Annie Leibovitz. Leibovitz is no stranger to a galaxy far, far away, having also done similar shoots for five other Star Wars films.  Now, the magazine has posted a video to their YouTube channel detailing Leibovitz’s visit to The Rise of Skywalker’s set. You can check it out for yourself below.

Leibovitz’s relationship with the Star Wars franchise dates back to 1980 when she photographed the cast of The Empire Strikes Back for Rolling Stone. In 1999, she began a tradition of capturing Star Wars sets for Vanity Fair starting with The Phantom Menace. Leibovitz’s visits are considered important milestones in the production of all entries in the Skywalker saga. According to director J.J. Abrams, that’s something he’s grateful for.

“The third of this trilogy, the ninth in these nine films, to have Annie Leibovitz come and document the work that’s being done, it’s a gift,” said Abrams.

“Annie has been a part of this saga for almost 40 years,” added Kathleen Kennedy. “She’s sharing in the culmination of this with all of us. It’s an incredible honor to have her step in and capture this moment.”

Naturally, the video also features some new behind-the-scenes footage and cast interviews. Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, and John Boyega reflect on the sequel trilogy’s impending conclusion. They also talk about how their time in the Star Wars universe has impacted their lives and careers.

“It feels like a proper journey,” said Ridley. “We were in the desert for the first one and now we’re here for the last one. I felt very nostalgic at many, many points…as everyone says, you don’t get experiences like this very often.”
