There’s a new king of the box office, but his hold on the throne is tenuous. Godzilla: King of the Monsters opened with $49 million; which was good enough to land the top spot at the weekend box office. However, Deadline is reporting that rival studios are projecting that King of the Monsters only make $47 million. Either way, that’s below the projected $60 million opening and far behind the $93 million that Godzilla made in its opening weekend back in 2014. Even Kong: Skull Island opened considerably higher than King of the Monsters with $61 million in 2017. These declining numbers suggest that Legendary’s MonsterVerse may not have as large a fanbase as they believed. That’s bad news for Godzilla vs. Kong; which will hit theaters in less than a year.
Disney’s live-action Aladdin came in with $42.3 million; which was a surprisingly strong showing. Depending upon King of the Monsters‘ final numbers, Aladdin was somewhere between $5 and $7 million behind Godzilla. New releases, Rocketman ($25 million) and Ma ($18.2 million), also came on strong in the third and fourth slots. John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum held on at number 5 with $11.1 million.

For the first time since its release, Avengers: Endgame fell out of the top five and landed at #6 with $7.8 million. Endgame has already secured its place as the second all-time domestic pic with $815 million. However, its momentum is fading quickly as more summer movies arrive.
Detective Pikachu took the seventh spot with $6.7 million. Booksmart was #8 with $3.3. million; while Brightburn fell to ninth place with $2.3 million. At number 10, The Hustle finished the weekend with $1.3 million.
Looking ahead to next weekend, the last 20th Century Fox X-Men movie, Dark Phoenix will arrive in theaters. That film is tracking at around $50 million; which means the X-Men will probably dethrone King of the Monsters‘ in its second weekend.
