Avengers: Endgame Writers Address Nick Fury’s Absence in the Final Battle

Endgame Writers Explain Nick Fury’s Absence in the Final Battle

For the final showdown with Thanos, Avengers: Endgame pulled out all of the stops. Nearly every surviving hero in the MCU showed up for the epic battle…except Nick Fury. Instead, Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic character had only a brief cameo appearance, but no lines within the film itself.

Endgame screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely recently spoke with ComicBook.com about the decision to hold Fury back.

“I don’t think we ever put him in,” said Markus. “It was [because] we have such a traffic jam of heroes and so much power, that to have a guy who, in combat, would just be firing a gun… it doesn’t come off well for Nick Fury, frankly.”

That said, there were more than a few characters in that scene who were essentially just firing guns. Rocket and the Winter Soldier, for example. Even Howard the Duck had a small cameo while holding a gun, which is more than Fury got.

Regardless, 2019 has been a big year for Fury. Jackson portrayed a much younger Nick Fury in Captain Marvel, before having a significantly larger role in Spider-Man: Far From Home. If Far From Home’s ending and post-credits scene are any indication, then Fury will once again have a big role in the future of the MCU. It also suggests how he might have been otherwise occupied.
