Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Avengers: Endgame!
The finale for Avengers: Endgame wrapped things up neatly, when Tony Stark defeated Thanos’ army with the help of his makeshift Infinity Gauntlet. But it cost Tony his life, and ended his time as Iron Man in the MCU. A deleted scene showed Tony’s fellow heroes paying tribute to his sacrifice by taking a knee on the battlefield. And during a recent AMA on Reddit, directors Anthony and Joe Russo spoke about why the scene wasn’t in the final film.
“We found the Avengers kneeling scene incredibly emotional as well, but when played in the run of the film, it felt incredibly similar to the moment when all of the heroes stood on the shore at Tony’s funeral, paying their respects to him outside his home,” wrote the Russos. “The two scenes, when in the film together, seemed to fight one another, and created a repetitious ending.”

One interesting aspect about the scene still remains – the fate of Gamora. The ending that made it into the film left Gamora’s whereabouts a mystery. But the deleted scene shows her quietly slipping away while the heroes focus on Stark’s death. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will probably address where Gamora went after that scene.
Avengers: Endgame is available now on digital. It will hit Blu-Ray, 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray and DVD on Tuesday, August 13.
