Lucasfilm Drops a New Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Poster At D23

Unfortunately for fans who couldn’t make it to Anaheim, Disney and Lucasfilm screened some new footage from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker at D23. Lucasfilm also released a new poster for the film, which was given out to D23 attendees. It features Rey and Kylo Ren in a rematch while an image of the Emperor looms over them.

In the new footage, Rey and Kylo appear to be dueling on a downed ship in the ocean as waves crash around them. Several Star Destroyers were also seen in a planet’s atmosphere. However, the image that drew the most gasps was Rey wielding a red dual blade lightsaber.

Director J.J. Abrams welcomed the cast to the D23 stage, and shared a tribute to the late Carrie Fisher. She apparently inscribed his copy of her book, The Princess Diarist, by thanking him for working with her “twice.” It was a joke, but Abrams felt that he really did work with her twice. Unused footage from The Force Awakens was utilized to give Fisher’s General Leia one final performance.

Keri Russell was among the cast members on hand, and she shed some light on her character. Via THR, Russell said “she’s very cool and a little bit shady. She’s kind of a criminal, and an old friend of Poe’s.”

Abrams also promised that a new trailer was in the works. The Rise of Skywalker will hit theaters on December 20.
