FX is Airing a New Jurassic World Short Film This Weekend

Universal has already set a June 11, 2021 release date for Jurassic World 3. Neither the cast nor returning director Colin Trevorrow has offered any hints about what to expect from the next installment. But fortunately, it sounds like a few clues might be coming sooner than we all anticipated. Trevorrow surprised fans earlier today when he announced that a new short film set in the Jurassic World universe is airing on TV this weekend.

The short film is titled Battle at Big Rock and will premiere on FX this Sunday, September 15. You can check out Trevorrow’s announcement via Twitter below.

Trevorrow’s captioned his tweet with a line from Ian Malcolm’s closing monologue in last year’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. That film memorably ended with dinosaurs set loose across the globe. So it seems likely that the new short will begin to show the ramifications of humans and dinosaurs learning to share the planet in the “Neo-Jurassic Age.”

Trevorrow also shared a few cast and crew details about the film. Battle at Big Rock stars André Holland, Natalie Martinez, Melody Hurd, and Pierson Salvador. It was written by Emily Carmichael, who previously co-wrote Pacific Rim: Uprising and is currently working on the Jurassic World 3 script with Trevorrow. Additionally, it features cinematography by Larry Fong (Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice) and music by Amie Doherty.

In the meantime, Jurassic World 3 still plans to start shooting next year. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are expected to reprise their roles as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing, respectively. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether the filmmakers will recruit any other veterans of the original Jurassic Park series to star after Jeff Goldblum briefly returned for Fallen Kingdom. However, during a recent interview with IMDb, Sam Neill was noticeably cagey when asked if he’ll be back as Alan Grant in the sequel. A few fans took his silence as confirmation of his involvement, but we’ll have to wait and see.
