Even though he worked on two projects in the franchise, Michael Dougherty doesn’t feel attracted to the X-Men anymore. The X-Men 2 writer said goodbye to the mutants after he wrote the story for X-Men: Apocalypse. In a recent interview with ComicBookMovie, Dougherty was asked about potentially if he would be interested in working again with the X-Men with a fresh take on the characters.
“No…not really!” he said laughing. “I love them but I think I’ve graduated from the Xavier School for The Gifted! I would much rather see them placed into the hands of fresh filmmakers.”

The fact that he said goodbye to the X-Men doesn’t mean he won’t take part anymore in a superhero movie. But for now, there’s any character he’s gravitating towards.
“I don’t ever want to completely say ‘no’ but, again, I’ve played in that arena so much, it does for me personally feel a bit like I’ve been there and done that,” he admitted. “I feel like they’re only getting better with time but I can’t name one particular superhero that’s left to interpret that I would want to put all my blood, sweat and tears into.”
Dougherty did a pretty good job with X-Men 2, which is one of the most appreciated movies in the franchise. The same maybe can’t be said for X-Men: Apocalypse, which received mostly negative notices. Meanwhile, Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters is now out on Blu-ray and 4K.
