James Gunn Fires Back At Martin Scorsese’s Marvel Comments

Cinematic icon Martin Scorsese recently shared his thoughts about Marvel’s films. Unfortunately, they’re not very complimentary. Via The Guardian, Scorsese told Empire Magazine that Marvel movies aren’t really “cinema” and likened them to theme park attractions. Now, Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has fired back at Scorsese’s remarks.

From the set of The Suicide Squad, Gunn recently posted on Twitter and expressed his feelings about Scorsese’s commentary.

“Martin Scorsese is one of my 5 favorite living filmmakers,” he said. “I was outraged when people picketed The Last Temptation of Christ without having seen the film. I’m saddened that he’s now judging my films in the same way. That said, I will always love Scorsese, be grateful for his contribution to cinema, and can’t wait to see The Irishman.”

Scorsese told Empire Magazine that he hasn’t seen any of the Marvel films all the way through. He also noted that he has no desire to watch them.

“I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema,” said Scorsese. “Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”

Some fans have defended Scorsese, who directed classics like Goodfellas and Raging Bull. However, others believe that Scorsese isn’t being fair to a genre that he hasn’t really seen.
