Samara Weaving Joins the Snake Eyes Spinoff as Scarlett

Snake Eyes is supposed to be the star of Paramount’s first G.I. Joe spinoff. Regardless, the film is turning into a veritable reunion of characters from the franchise. According to Deadline, Samara Weaving has been cast in the film as yet another familiar face from the G.I. Joe universe. She’ll play Scarlett, a member of the Joes who has a unique relationship with the title character.

Weaving most recently headlined Ready or Not, which hit theaters this summer. She is also known for her role on the Showtime series SMILF. Some of her other screen credits include Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Mayhem, and the Netflix film The Babysitter. Next up, Weaving will appear in Bill & Ted Face the Music as Thea Preston, the daughter of Keanu Reeves’ character.

Scarlett was part of the classic G.I. Joe team, having made her first appearance as an action figure in 1982. Her primary function was counter-intelligence, and she was instantly recognizable thanks to preferred weapon of choice (a crossbow) and her fiery red hair. She became close with Snake Eyes after a team training session where he let her win during a sparring match even though she knew he was the better fighter. Their bond deepened after a botched mission in the Middle East. When Scarlett was trapped inside the team’s downed helicopter, Snake Eyes stayed behind to rescue her. He succeeded, but not before an exploding window scarred his face and damaged his vocal cords.

Weaving won’t be the first actress to play Scarlett in live-action. Rachel Nichols previously brought the character to life in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra in 2009. Other G.I. Joe fixtures making an appearance in Snake Eyes include Storm Shadow (Andrew Koji) and Baroness (Úrsula Corberó).  Deadline’s report also revealed that Takehiro Hira has joined the film’s cast. Unfortunately, the nature of his role remains a mystery.

Snake Eyes begins production in Vancouver this week. The film will arrive in theaters on October 16, 2020.
