After achieving big success with HBO’s Chernobyl, series creator Craig Mazin already has his next project lined up. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has just recruited Mazin to write their long-gestating reboot of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
Mazin’s work on Chernobyl netted him an Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series and another for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special. Before this, he was primarily known for his comedic work, writing parody films like two Scary Movie installments and Superhero Movie (which he also directed). Additionally, Mazin tried his hand at the action-adventure genre when he co-wrote The Huntsman: Winter’s War in 2016.

Disney began getting serious about breathing new life into the Pirates franchise last year. The studio originally enlisted Deadpool and Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to craft the story. Unfortunately, the duo wound up departing the project back in February. The reboot seems to have been dormant since then. Mazin won’t be the only writer tackling this new film. He’ll pen the script alongside Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the first four movies in the series with Terry Rossio. Jerry Bruckheimer will also remain onboard the reboot as a producer.
It’s still anyone’s guess as to whether the film will invite Johnny Depp to come back as Captain Jack Sparrow. The Pirates series has always been a major box office draw. However, moviegoers may not be as receptive to Depp’s return given his recent behind-the-scenes troubles, including allegations of domestic abuse. The actor was most recently seen in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, which hit theaters last year.
