Tim Miller Wanted The Thing to Fight Juggernaut in Deadpool 2

The massive success of Deadpool paved the way for Tim Miller to direct Terminator: Dark Fate, which opens this week. However, Miller had every intention of helming Deadpool 2 until he left the sequel over creative differences with the studio. Fans got an idea of how different his version of the movie would have been when concept artist Alexander Lozano shared designs for a scrapped Fantastic Four cameo earlier this year. Now, Miller is explaining how one specific member of Marvel’s First Family would have factored into the film’s story.

Miller recently spoke to The Playlist’s Fourth Wall podcast to talk about Dark Fate. Although he had a lot to say about the making of the highly anticipated Terminator sequel, the conversation also touched on his Deadpool work as well. After they stopped recording for the podcast, Miller revealed a few morsels about his vision for Deadpool 2. Apparently, one of Miller’s ideas would have pit Ben Grimm/The Thing against the Juggernaut.

Miller “got permission” from 20th Century Fox to use the Thing in Deadpool 2’s final battle. But in David Leitch’s finished movie, audiences had to settle for Colossus taking his place. Lozano’s Thing concept art resembled the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, so perhaps Jamie Bell was supposed to reprise his role.

Additionally, Miller claims that he “cracked the secret to the Vanessa storyline.” In Leitch’s sequel, Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa was killed off before the opening credits sequence. But if Miller had his way, the film would have furthered the love story between her and Wade Wilson. Plus, we would have seen her become Copycat, like her comic book counterpart. Miller also wanted “a [comic accurate] Cable who was 6 feet, 7 inches” tall, as opposed to Josh Brolin’s 5’10” take on the time-traveling mutant.
