Warning: There are spoilers for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker ahead!
For the vast majority of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Luke Skywalker’s Force ghost was nowhere to be seen. However, that changed late in the film when Mark Hamill’s iconic hero imparted some wisdom on Rey. But apparently that key moment wasn’t part of the initial production. While being interviewed on the Art of the Cut podcast, the film’s co-editor, Maryann Brandon, shared some details about that pivotal scene.
According to Brandon, the film’s creative team didn’t work out everything Luke needed to say to Rey until the film was in the editing process.
“The film kind of informed us, after it was together, what it needed to say so we went back and got that dialogue,” explained Brandon. “There was like a funny moment between Poe and Rey when he lands the Falcon and it’s on fire, we wanted to have a more humorous exchange between them. Nothing major, no.”

Additionally, Brandon noted that Rey’s first scene was also changed in reshoots. In the film, Rey is reintroduced while attempting to reach the Jedi who came before her. In the distance, Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) looks on to see how Rey’s training is coming along. Brandon didn’t go into detail about what was changed, but it apparently helped the scene flow a little more smoothly.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out in theaters now.
