New Star Wars Novel Will Explore Poe Dameron’s Backstory

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker gave moviegoers a few clues about Poe Dameron’s past when Zorii Bliss casually mentioned that he used to dabble in spice running. Now, an upcoming young adult novel will shed new light on this less-than-flattering period in Poe’s life. Polygon brings word that the new book, titled, Star Wars: Poe Dameron: Free Fall, is arriving this summer.

Free Fall comes courtesy of author Alex Segura, who is best known for his series of Pete Fernandez mystery novels. Segura actually isn’t the first writer to delve into Poe’s backstory in another medium. Back in 2015, Marvel’s Star Wars: Shattered Empire miniseries followed Poe’s Rebel parents as they helped Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia eliminate lingering Imperial threats in the immediate aftermath of Return of the Jedi.

However, the story happens after the death of Poe’s mother, which created a rift between him and his father. With this, Poe decides to strike out on his own and discover his place in the galaxy. According to Segura, the book will serve as the character’s official origin story.

“I think Free Fall will answer some of the biggest questions fans will have coming out of The Rise of Skywalker. What was Poe Dameron’s secret history as a spice runner, and what does it have to do with the mysterious, helmet-wearing Zorii Bliss? The book will spend a lot of time with Poe during his formative teen years, where we see him grow into the man we meet at the beginning of The Force Awakens.”

Star Wars: Poe Dameron: Free Fall will hit bookstores on August 4. Will you be picking up a copy of the book when it’s released? Let us know in the comment section below!
