This week marked the official start of production on Matt Reeves’ The Batman. And now, Michael Giacchino has confirmed that he’s also hard at work on composing the film’s music. Giacchino already has experience with superheroes thanks to his work on Marvel’s Spider-Man and Doctor Strange movies. But since Batman has had more cinematic iterations than any other comic book character, he’s following in the footsteps of several big-name composers who have previously scored the Dark Knight’s big-screen adventures.
Thankfully, things seem to be going smoothly on his end. Giacchino recently spoke with Preston & Steve’s Fun Size Podcast (via Heroic Hollywood) ahead of his appearance at this weekend’s BAFTAs. When the subject of composing The Batman came up, he gave an update on his progress. And apparently, he’s looking to incorporate Eastern influences and new kinds of instruments into his score.

“I’m actually kind of in the middle of that right now,” said Giacchino. “I’m trying to figure out some things for Batman. And while I do have the theme written and we actually have recorded a version of the suite and everything so that Matt can have it while he’s working and he can have it on set. The bones are there, but I still feel like there’s still one little thing missing, and it’s exactly something like that. I haven’t quite found it yet. But, I will.”
Giacchino recently earned a BAFTA nomination for scoring Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit. In addition to his upcoming work on The Batman, he’s also expected to return to Marvel Studios for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as well as the follow-up to Spider-Man: Far From Home.
The Batman will hit theaters on June 25, 2021.
