Coming into this year’s Academy Awards, Joker was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, and nine other Oscar categories. However, it was Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite that took home Best Picture and Best Director, as well as International Feature and Original Screenplay. But that doesn’t mean that Joker walked away empty-handed.
As expected, Joaquin Phoenix won the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck/Joker. Additionally, this makes Phoenix the second actor to win an Oscar for playing Joker. The late Heath Ledger was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his take on the Joker in The Dark Knight.
Hildur Guðnadóttir also made Oscar history as the first female composer to win Best Original Score. Guðnadóttir’s music for Joker will also be a part of a worldwide concert tour later in 2020.

Brad Pitt and Laura Dern took the respective Supporting Actor and Actress Awards for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Marriage Story. Taika Waititi won Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit, and Toy Story 4 took home the Best Animated Feature award.
