Later this year, Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife will reunite the cast of the franchise’s original two films while also introducing a handful of new characters. Unfortunately, the absence of Harold Ramis’ Egon Spengler will definitely be felt when the film opens in July. Ramis died in 2014 at the age of 69 after suffering from autoimmune inflammatory vasculitis. Now, on the sixth anniversary of his passing, the Ghostbusters family is paying tribute to their fallen teammate.
Earlier today, the official Ghostbusters Twitter page shared fan art courtesy of another user. The image shows Ramis’ Egon leaving his proton pack behind as he walks hand-in-hand with Slimer toward the afterlife. The Ghostbusters account also promises that the franchise will “carry on his legacy forever.” You can check out the post for yourself below.

Ramis co-wrote the original 1984 Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel with his co-star Dan Aykroyd. Before he died, Ramis reprised his role as Egon one last time in Ghostbusters: The Video Game in 2009. Although Ramis spent a few years trying to produce a third Ghostbusters film while he was still alive, these efforts never panned out. The 2016 all-female reboot paid tribute to Ramis by including a bronze bust of his likeness in a scene at Columbia University. A recent trailer for Afterlife hinted that this film centers on Spengler’s grandchildren, but this is still unconfirmed.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife hits theaters on July 10.
