Is The New Mutants Same-Sex Relationship Story All Hype?

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for The New Mutants!

The New Mutants is almost in theaters after getting delayed for two years. But now that the film is just a few weeks away, director Josh Boone is touting the same-sex relationship at the heart of the film between Maisie Williams’ Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane and Blu Hunt’s Danielle Moonstar/Mirage.

“[There is] a beautiful love story; which I know is a weird thing to hear,” said Boone while speaking with Entertainment Weekly. “It’s sort of the spine and focus of some of the character-driven stuff in the film.”

Williams noted that the idea for this relationship was built out of the telepathic bond that Rahne and Dani share in Marvel’s comic book continuity.

“Rahne and Dani have a telepathic connection in the comics, and so we just wanted to extend that in the film and put that within reality,” noted Williams. “If they really could understand each other on that level, then you’d probably end up falling in love with that person.”

However, the comic book incarnations of Rahne and Dani have never been in a romantic relationship with each other. Additionally, comic book Rahne is so repressed by her deeply religious upbringing that she’s never demonstrated any attraction to another woman. Conversely, the New Mutants’ only openly gay founding member, Xi’an Coy Manh/Karma, was left out of the film. There have been hints that Xi’an and Dani could have had a relationship in the comics, but there was never any romance between Dani and Rahne. Their bond was more sisterly.

Williams also said that the film never fully defines Rahne and Dani’s relationship as a romance.

“It’s not really a story about these two characters understanding their sexuality,” admitted Williams. “It’s not centered around that and they don’t really necessarily label it. No one else does either and no one really questions it.”

Whether that will satisfy LGBT fans looking for representation remains to be seen.

The New Mutants will hit theaters on April 3.
