Winston Duke Says M’Baku Had More Screen Time in Avengers: Endgame’s Final Battle

Avengers: Endgame memorably wrapped up 22 films worth of storylines with an epic final battle that spanned nearly half an hour. Given the amount of characters present, some of the MCU’s tertiary players had to settle for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance in order to allow Marvel’s A-listers to shine. One of those characters was Winston Duke’s M’Baku. But although he only briefly showed up onscreen during the fight, Duke says he originally had much more to do.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about his latest movie, Spenser Confidential, Duke confirmed that he filmed his Endgame scenes on a green screen stage with the rest of the actors. However, he also gave fans an idea of how much footage was cut from the final film.

“The raw footage was just so long with everyone that my stuff didn’t make it in,” said Duke. “I filmed so much fighting for it, and I was really bummed to not see any of it in the movie. I did so many fighting scenes in Endgame during that final battle… It was really cool. Marvel knows what they’re doing, and it all leads to the best product. So, I am happy; I was just very disappointed that nobody got to see all the stuff I was doing.”

Thankfully, this isn’t the last we’ll see of M’Baku in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Duke recently made waves when he shared his hope that his character takes a villainous turn in Black Panther 2. Regardless, he admitted that he’s had no discussions with writer and director Ryan Coogler about his role in the sequel.

“We’re just waiting to see where it goes,” Duke said. “I’ve seen nothing, I’ve heard nothing, I haven’t been told a thing. I just trust that they’re going to invest in M’Baku and tell a really bold story.”

Spenser Confidential is currently streaming on Netflix, and Black Panther 2 will arrive on May 6, 2022.
