For nearly three decades, Peter Quill’s Walkman was there when nobody else was. His “Awesome Mix” helped him cope with both his mother’s death and his subsequent abduction from Earth. Now, James Gunn is hoping to liven up the pandemic-induced isolation by releasing yet another assortment of throwback jams. The director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films has compiled even more of Meredith Quill’s favorite songs in a new Spotify playlist.
Volumes 1 and 2 of the “Awesome Mix” have been available as the soundtracks to both Guardians films since their release. But Gunn’s new playlist is made up of songs that didn’t make the final cut of either movie. You can check out his full announcement via Instagram below.

Aside from Hall & Oates’ “She’s Gone,” the playlist features 63 other songs (almost four hours of music) hailing from decades past. The tracks also span multiple genres, with artists as diverse as KISS, Three Dog Night, and the recently departed Bill Withers. Note that Gunn isn’t ruling out using any of these songs in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But until that film’s release draws nearer, it’s fun to listen and imagine how they could have been used in the first two installments.
