Back in 2016, David Ayer was the first director to bring Harley Quinn to the big screen in Suicide Squad. On the strength of that movie, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn also became the central figure of the Birds of Prey film earlier this year. Recently, a fan on Twitter wrote that “Harley was sexualized in the entire Suicide Squad movie and in Birds Of Prey she was a real character, not a eyecandy.” Instead of arguing with the fan, Ayer seemed to agree with her.

Several important Harley Quinn and Joker moments were cut from Suicide Squad. Those edits downplayed the toxic elements of Joker and Harley’s relationship, and celebrated their romance. However, that wasn’t Ayer’s original intent for the characters.
Regardless of the earlier fan’s remarks, other Twitter users rallied around Ayer. They also shared their support for his vision and gave him credit for paving the way for Harley’s cinematic future.
Don’t apologize for your work David. You launched a brilliant character who resonated with many men and women and her popularity was so big that it made BoP possible! Harley was a nuanced character in the movie and not just eye candy!
