Jared Leto got a raw deal when he portrayed the Joker in Suicide Squad back in 2016. Not only was Leto’s screen time in the movie greatly reduced, his take on the Clown Prince of Crime was soon overshadowed by Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar-winning performance in Joker. It seems highly unlikely that Leto will return to the DC Universe anytime soon. And this fact isn’t lost on David Ayer, who once again took to Twitter to ponder how Leto’s Joker was treated.
Ayer also admitted that he continues to feel bad for Leto over the way things played out. You can read what he had to say below.
For sure character creation is a tightrope. I took inspiration from the current DC comics. I find it incredible it’s still such a topic 5 years later. My heart breaks for Jared – he did magnificent work. Most of it remains unseen. https://t.co/IRj7vB1ZjG

Leto had long expressed an interest in coming back to play the Joker in a future DCEU installment. Reportedly, Leto even made attempts to stop Phoenix’s movie from happening before it started production. Unfortunately, the fact that Leto didn’t even have a cameo in Birds of Prey appears to suggest that he’s done with the role. In the meantime, Leto will return to the comic book realm when he stars in Morbius next year.
