Andy Serkis Says The Batman Will Be Even Darker Than the Earlier Films

Filmmakers have approached Batman from a variety of different perspectives throughout the last several decades. But over time, it’s become clear that the vast majority of fans prefer their Dark Knight to be dark. Fortunately, Andy Serkis is assuring fans that they won’t have anything to worry about when Batman returns to theaters next year.

Serkis, who is playing Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman, recently discussed his performance in an interview with LAD Bible. When asked if the upcoming reboot will be darker than previous iterations, he seemed to confirm that this will be the case. He also revealed that Alfred’s relationship with Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne will serve as the heart of the movie.

“I would say that’s not far from the truth,” said Serkis. “It’s very much about the emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce. That’s really at the centre of it. And it is a really exquisite script that Matt [Reeves] has written.”

Serkis is far from the first actor to play Alfred onscreen. Michael Gough, Michael Caine, and Jeremy Irons have filled the role over the years. However, Serkis insists that he’s not trying to crib from anyone else’s performance. Instead, he’s trying to put his own stamp on Batman’s loyal butler.

“He [Caine] was fantastic,” added Serkis. “His Alfred was legendary, I couldn’t even begin to go there, really. You find it for yourself. It’s like playing these iconic roles in Shakespeare, you go back, you revisit them and you have to make it your own, and see what it is about the character that connects with you and your personal venn diagram.”

The Batman opens in theaters on October 1, 2021.
