David Ayer Comments on the Possibility of a Suicide Squad Director’s Cut

Earlier this week, Zack Snyder confirmed that his Justice League cut is hitting HBO Max in 2021. This inevitably re-ignited the conversation about alternate cuts of other poorly-received superhero movies also possibly getting released down the line.  David Ayer’s Suicide Squad also experienced its share of drama during post-production. Now, Ayer is addressing whether a new version of his film is likely to see the light of day.

Ayer actually fueled the rumor mill himself with a pair of mysterious postings on Twitter. Shortly after the Snyder Cut news broke, Ayer tweeted out some Joker-related images that appeared to suggest that the announcement of a Suicide Squad director’s cut wasn’t far behind. Unfortunately, when a fan suggested that certain legal hurdles would prevent this from happening, Ayer essentially confirmed that this was the case.

The ball is firmly in Warner Bros. court on this one. It certainly bodes well that Ayer doesn’t seem to harbor any ill will toward the studio. Ayer has also said that there’s a lot more footage of Jared Leto’s Joker nestled somewhere in the WB archives. Regardless, there’s the matter of what kind of resources the studio is willing to give Ayer to realize his true vision of the film. Warner Bros. is reportedly giving Snyder an estimated $20-30 million to properly finish his Justice League cut.
