The Justice League Snyder Cut May Cost More Than $30 Million

Earlier this month, a very vocal group of fans finally got their wish: director Zack Snyder will deliver his cut of Justice League in 2021 on HBO Max. The initial reports indicated that Snyder will have $30 million to complete his vision for the film. However, WarnerMedia Chairman Bob Greenblatt hinted that the budget may be much higher. During a recent appearance on the Recode Media podcast, Greenblatt told host Peter Kafka about the challenges of putting the Snyder Cut together.

“It’s been months of discussions with Zack and the producers to figure out how to do it,” said Greenblatt. “Because it isn’t as easy as going into a vault and there’s a Snyder Cut that’s sitting there to put out. It does not exist. Zack is actually building it, and it’s complex, including…new FX shots. It’s a radical re-thinking of that movie, and it’s complicated and wildly expensive.”

Greenblatt declined to say how much money was actually being put into the project. But when Kafka brought up the previously reported $20 to $30 million figure, Greenblatt replied “I’ll just say I wish it was just $30 million and stop there.”

“It’s an enormous undertaking,” continued Greenblatt. “We had to go to the unions and get certain things cleared with them about what we were doing. ‘Is the Snyder Cut a new movie or is it a recut?’ There’s lots of complexity that the [average] fan doesn’t know about.”

Additionally, Greenblatt explained that the studio hadn’t been sitting on this news for months. Instead, the preliminary deal wasn’t in place until last week.
