Bruce Campbell Shares Plans For a New Evil Dead Movie

The future of the Evil Dead franchise has been hazy ever since Ash vs. Evil Dead ended in 2018. But while Bruce Campbell has insisted that he’s done playing Ash Williams, he isn’t abandoning the franchise. In a new interview with Empire, Campbell revealed that a new film set in the Evil Dead universe is indeed in the works. In fact, he and creator Sam Raimi have already chosen a director for the project.

“We’re just getting off the phone with Lee Cronin, who is writing and directing the next Evil Dead,” said Campbell. “It’s called Evil Dead Now. Sam handpicked Lee – he did a cool movie called The Hole in the Ground. We’re going to get that sucker out as soon as practical.”

The Hole in the Ground marked Cronin’s first feature film after previously only directing shorts and TV episodes. Incidentally, the same was true of Fede Alvarez when he made his own feature directorial debut with the Evil Dead reboot in 2013. That film centered on a new female protagonist and only featured Campbell’s Ash in a post-credits cameo appearance. And according to Cambell, introducing new lead characters is the key to the franchise’s longevity.

“From this point forward, they kind of have to stand on their own,” added Campbell. “Which is fine. And liberating. You could have different heroes, different heroines in this case. This one’s gonna be a little more dynamic. We just want to keep the series current. And the mantra, really, is that our heroes and heroines are just regular people. That’s what we’re going to continue.”
