Denis Villeneuve’s Dune Will Film Additional Scenes in August

With coronavirus-related restrictions beginning to ease around the world, several high-profile film and TV productions are getting back underway. But as it turns out, this includes movies that supposedly wrapped principal photography a year ago. According to Oscar Isaac, the cast and crew behind Denis Villeneuve’s highly-anticipated Dune remake will return to Europe later this summer to complete additional filming.

Isaac, who appears in the movie as Duke Leo Atreides, confirmed this news in a recent interview with Deadline. However, he seemed to suggest that the upcoming round of filming won’t impact Dune’s December release date, citing his experience with another big-name sci-fi film as proof.

“We’re going to do some additional shooting in mid August… they’re saying in Budapest in Hungary,” said Isaac. “I saw some things cut together and it just looks amazing. Denis [Villeneuve] is a real artist and it will be exciting to see it come together. It’s kind of wild that we’re doing some additional shooting a few months before it’s supposed to come out, but that happened with Star Wars as well.”

The project began shooting at Origo Film Studios in Budapest in March of last year. Production also moved around to Jordan and Norway before wrapping in July. Isaac’s comments follow recent reports that Hungary will be one of the next European nations to resume work on film and TV projects. Of course, this will be done “with extensive coronavirus safety measures in place.”

Dune will hit theaters on December 18.
