Hugh Jackman Honors X-Men’s 20th Anniversary with BTS Video

It may seem like almost yesterday that the first X-Men movie hit theaters. But actually, one of the first major box-office successes in comic book related movies debuted 20 years ago, today. And X-Men star Hugh Jackman seems to remember it well, given that he took to Twitter to share a funny X-Men behind-the-scenes video of him fighting with… Wolverine. Of course, his opponent was just a toy; from the images, it looks like a Toy Biz figure from 1996. The actor also revealed that he had to quickly get in shape for that part in the movie. (Original choice Dougray Scott had to bow out at the last minute over a scheduling conflict.)

“So here’s the thing,” he wrote. “When the studio called and asked if I could get in shape to play Wolverine in 3 weeks. I might have over promised! But wouldn’t you have too? Happy 20th Anniversary X-Men Universe.”

Well, answering that call was perhaps one of the best choices in Jackman’s life, since his career had an impressive surge in popularity thanks to his portrayal of Wolverine. The fans loved him so much as the surly member of the X-Men that the Australian actor reprised the role in eight more movies before saying goodbye to his character in James Mangold’s Logan, almost twenty years later. But through all that, the fans never saw the Australian actor wearing the yellow and blue spandex like his toy counterpart. Classic-look Wolverine fans are putting their trust in Marvel Studios, as the character will likely debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe soon enough.
