Lord and Miller Tease Silk’s Arrival in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2

It’s been known for a while now that Sony is bringing in some colorful new heroes to team up with Miles Morales and his interdimensional spider-friends in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. The studio has yet to share which characters will debut in the sequel, but speculation continues to run rampant. Now, producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller have all but confirmed at least one new addition to the sequel’s stacked cast of wallcrawlers.

Lord took to Twitter earlier today to ask for tips on preventing the spread of the coronavirus. Apparently, his ears “aren’t big enough or stiff enough” to support wearing a mask in the usual way. Miller responded by sharing an image of the perfect hero for the COVID-19 era: Silk (a.k.a. Cindy Moon), who famously wears a handkerchief to conceal her identity. You can check out their exchange below.

The filmmakers behind the Into the Spider-Verse franchise actually considered using Silk, a Korean-American character, in the original movie. However, they decided to use Peni Parker (another Asian-American Spider-Woman) and her SP//dr robot instead because she seemed more unique when compared to the film’s other heroes. Silk is also slated to appear in Sony’s upcoming Into the Spider-Verse spinoff headlined by female characters. Additionally, the studio is still developing a Silk movie set in their own live-action Marvel Universe.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 finally began production last month. The film will swing into theaters on October 7, 2022.
