Francis Lawrence Wants to Make a Constantine Sequel, But Can’t

Fifteen years have already passed since Francis Lawrence’s Constantine hit the theaters. The first live-action adaptation of the British occult detective left many comic-book fans unsatisfied, but it has become a cult movie of his own over the years. In a recent interview with SlashFilm, director Lawrence reiterated that he and Keanu Reeves are open for a sequel.

“We have been talking about it recently. It’s always stuck with all of us because we all love the movie, and especially realizing there’s a real cult following for this movie, it’d be fun to make. Keanu [Reeves], [producer] Akiva [Goldsman], and I have actually talked about it.”

Lawrence’s film used some elements from Garth Ennis’ Dangerous Habits story arc, but changed some pivotal factors like John Constantine’s nationality (from British to American).

The director went on to add that some major hindrances are preventing a Constantine sequel from happening at the moment. Like the fact that DC has other, unspecified plans for the character.

“With all these shared universes that exist now, with Constantine being a part of Vertigo, which is a part of DC, people have plans for these shared universes. You know, possibly different Constantines and things like that. Right now, we don’t have that character available to us for TV or movies, which is a bummer. We all investigated it, but I think it’s kind of crazy when you have Keanu, who would love to do another Constantine, and us wanting to do another Constantine, and people are like, “Uh, no, we got other plans.”

Perhaps, he is referring to Constantine’s current involvement in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Or maybe DC will reboot the character sooner or later on some other platform. Like HBO Max’s Justice League Dark series.
