This fall, Paramount was hoping to hit the reset button on its G.I. Joe franchise with a standalone film centering on everybody’s favorite mute commando, Snake Eyes. Unfortunately, the reboot is going to have to wait until next year. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the studio is holding off on releasing Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins until 2021.
News of the film’s delay comes from Hasbro Chairman and CEO Brian Goldner, who was discussing the negative financial effects that COVID-19-related shutdowns have had on his company. Not surprisingly, the pandemic is to blame for Snake Eyes’ postponement as well.
“We’re working out the specifics with Paramount,” said Goldner.

Directed by Robert Schwentke and starring Henry Golding in the title role, the new Snake Eyes film will tell his origin in a continuity separate from the 2009 G.I. Joe film and its 2013 follow-up, G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The movie will also explore Snake Eyes’ relationship with his friend-turned-enemy, Storm Shadow, as played by Andrew Koji.
This isn’t the first time that Snake Eyes has been delayed. Paramount was originally planning to release the film in March of this year before moving it to October. It seems likely that this latest shift will also affect the dates of other upcoming Hasbro adaptations hitting theaters under the company’s AllSpark pictures banner. This includes the Micronauts film, which recruited Dean DeBlois’ as its writer and director last fall; and F. Gary Gray’s M.A.S.K. The studio is also developing more films set in its rebooted G.I. Joe universe.
