DC fans got their first taste of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad at DC FanDome last month with a sneak peek that showed the film’s actors and producers gushing over the movie. Some of the cast’s remarks also suggested that the upcoming film won’t be suitable for younger audiences. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Joel Kinnaman confirmed that this will indeed be the case. According to Kinnaman, the film will really push the boundaries of its R-rating.
Kinnaman is reprising his original Suicide Squad role as Rick Flagg in the new film. During FanDome, Kinnaman teased that Gunn’s follow-up will “surprise” fans. But it sounds like this was putting it mildly.
“That movie is going to be insane,” said Kinnaman. “The script is so funny. Every page of that script was funny, and every page made me laugh. James just has this command of that genre, but also over every aspect of comedy and even the marketing. He just understands the world so well, and since he wrote it, he really reinvents not just the concepts, but also the characters.”

“For me, it was like I did my first comedy,” continued Kinnaman. “But it’s like heavily R-rated. It was a real learning experience for me too because I’d never done a comedy in that way before. So I asked James to work with me and teach me this s***. And yeah, we had so much fun doing it. That movie is going to be a f***ing monster. Honestly, even though I’m in it, I can’t wait to see it as a fan.”
Although there was speculation that David Ayer’s original Suicide Squad film was going to be rated R, Ayer insisted that this was never in the cards because he wanted to reach as wide of an audience as possible. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. released its first R-rated DCEU movie, Birds of Prey. Unfortunately, that film’s raunchy tone didn’t do much to help its box office figures. But if Kinnaman speaks the truth about Gunn’s command over marketing strategy (and given his success with Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films, he probably does), perhaps The Suicide Squad will have better luck when it hits theaters.
The Suicide Squad will hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
