Universal Delays Jurassic World: Dominion to 2022

Yesterday, Warner Bros. delayed several of its upcoming blockbusters due to the coronavirus pandemic. Now, Universal is following suit with what might have been its biggest release of 2021. Variety is reporting that Jurassic World: Dominion will now hit theaters on June 10, 2022.

Universal was originally hoping to release the movie on June 11, 2021. This means that fans now have to wait 20 months to see dinosaurs on the big-screen again. The wait is especially painful, since the sequel’s biggest selling point is that it reunites Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum in the same movie for the first time since Jurassic Park premiered in 1993. Production on Dominion began in February before the pandemic shut everything down the following month. Filming resumed in July with strict safety regulations in place.

Director Colin Trevorrow shared his thoughts on the delay, along with a new teaser poster, via his Twitter account.

Previously, Universal postponed its next entry in the Fast & Furious franchise, F9, to May 28, 2021. Because this is in such close proximity to Dominion’s original release date, it’s possible that the next Jurassic World entry was moved to give Vin Diesel and his car buddies some extra breathing room at the box office.

Despite this latest news, there will be more Jurassic World content for fans to absorb in the coming months. Netflix recently premiered its Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous animated series. And in December, Oculus will release its Jurassic World: Aftermath VR game. Universal Orlando Resort is also planning to launch its Jurassic World-inspired VelociCoaster at its Islands of Adventure park next summer. But since the ride’s opening was probably meant to coincide with Dominion’s theatrical debut, it’s not clear if this will get pushed back as well.
