Scarlett Johansson To Produce and Star in A24’s Bride

Thanks to COVID-19, Scarlett Johansson won’t return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe until Black Widow hits theaters next May. But Johansson has just booked her next big film role. Deadline brings word that Johansson has inked a deal to star in Bride, a new sci-fi feature from A24.

Described as a “genre-bending” film, Bride comes from Chilean filmmaker Sebastián Lelio. Previously, Lelio took home an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for A Fantastic Woman in 2017. Lelio’s most recent film, Gloria Bell, was also released by A24 last year. He’s also co-writing Bride with Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo.

Judging by the film’s logline, Bride sounds like a sci-fi re-imagining of the classic Bride of Frankenstein story. Johansson will star as “a woman created to be an ideal wife — the singular obsession of a brilliant entrepreneur. When she rejects her creator, she’s forced to flee her confined existence, confronting a world that sees her as a monster. It is on the run that she finds her true identity, her surprising power, and the strength to remake herself as her own creation.”

Johannson will also produce the film alongside These Pictures’ Jonathan Lia. Bride is part of a first-look pact between A24 and Apple TV+, meaning the film will exclusively debut on that streaming service. Regardless, a limited theatrical engagement is always a possibility. Neither Apply TV+ nor the studio has shared when the movie might premiere.
