Though not very well-received, the last two G.I. Joe installments weren’t lacking in big fight sequences. But as expected, the upcoming Snake Eyes spinoff will highlight the ninjutsu combat practiced by the movie’s titular commando. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, actor Henry Golding discussed what kind of action we’ll see when the movie arrives next year. He also revealed where the filmmakers found inspiration for these scenes.
Back in August, Golding was lucky enough to watch a rough cut of Snake Eyes during a socially-distanced screening on the Paramount lot. He also tweeted that the film would be “the exact opposite of the cookie cutter, super people movies” that dominate the multiplex these days. Apparently, we have director Robert Schwentke’s extensive knowledge of Japanese cinema to thank for that.
“Robert is a huge Japanese cinephile,” said Golding. “Everything from [Akira] Kurosawa to just the phenomenal Spaghetti Westerns of samurai movies. He is so hooked into that history and we see some of those scenes. With some of the fight scenes there are some chimbara sequences. A lot of attention to cultural detail was put into this movie. There are not a lot of movies that are allowed to film in Japan and we went to some amazing, amazing places. The authenticity is there.”

Golding also added that Snake Eyes will benefit from narrowing its focus to one hero rather than scrambling to give other characters screen time.
“I think the heart of the story really is who Snake is and his journey as a person, really. Understanding his motivations,” noted Golding. I can’t give away too much, but it really focuses on the one person instead of having 20 people on screen and understanding background. We start from the beginning. And, hopefully, this launches an amazing franchise.”
Snake Eyes will hits theater on October 22, 2021.
